A garage does not get messy because it lacks shelves. It gets messy because everything on the floor has no home. A wall of hooks is the fastest fix, and it costs less than one plastic storage bin.

Start by Looking Down

Walk through and note what is living on the floor. Hoses, ladders, bikes, cords, brooms, folding chairs. Those are your hook candidates. Anything that can hang should hang. Floor space is the most expensive real estate in a garage.

Mounting the Rail

You do not need an anchor for every single hook. Mount a horizontal strip of 2×4 lumber across the studs, then screw hooks into the wood wherever you want them. That way you can move hooks later without patching drywall.

1. Find the studs with a stud finder or by tapping until the sound goes solid.
2. Screw the 2×4 across at least three studs with 3 inch screws.
3. Space hooks about a foot apart and leave extra room for wide items.

Heavy Things Need Bigger Hardware

A ladder weighs a lot. Use heavy duty utility hooks rated well above the weight, or a dedicated ladder hook. A bent hook that drops a ladder on your foot is a bad trade for saving five dollars.

I hung a coil of garden hose on a single small hook the first summer and it sagged to the floor by August. The second attempt used a proper hose hanger and it has held for three years.
