My favorite baseball cap had a permanent sweat ring around the band. You know the one, that yellow-brown line that makes a perfectly good hat look grimy no matter how much you wear it.

I almost threw it out. Instead I tried a cleaning method I saw mentioned in a random forum, and the hat came out looking nearly new. Here is the whole thing.

Why sweat stains are hard

Sweat stains are not just dirt. They are a mix of salt, oils, and dead skin that sets into the fabric. Regular detergent gets the dirt but leaves the oils behind, which is why the stain keeps coming back.

The key is treating the oils and proteins, not just the grime.

Step by step

1. Mix a small paste of baking soda and a little water, or a squirt of dish soap with a sprinkle of baking soda.
2. Work it into the sweat ring with an old toothbrush.
3. Let it sit for twenty to thirty minutes.
4. Hand wash the whole hat in cool water with a little mild detergent.
5. Rinse well and air dry it on a ball or a towel so it keeps its shape.

Do not put it in the washing machine

The agitator and the heat will warp the brim and fade the fabric. Dishwasher runs are a gamble too, and they can deform the cap. Hand washing is slower but it is the only way to keep the shape intact.

Air dry only. A dryer will shrink the band and crack the brim. Stuff the crown with a small towel so it dries in the right shape.

It worked on mine

The baking soda pulled out the oils, the toothbrush got into the weave, and the ring was gone after one treatment. I have done it twice since and the cap still looks good. Sometimes the low-tech fix is the one that actually works.
