I had an old phone sitting in a drawer. It was three years old. The battery lasted two hours. It was worth maybe forty dollars on eBay. Then I found out it could be a security camera. For free. I pointed it at my front porch and now I can see who is at the door from anywhere.

The Free App That Makes This Work

AlfredCamera is the app I use. It is free. You install it on both your old phone and your current phone. The old phone becomes the camera. Your current phone becomes the viewer. It streams live video, records motion-triggered clips, and has night vision mode on most phones.

There are other options — Manything and Haven work too — but Alfred has been the most reliable for me. I have been using it for eight months now.

Setting It Up Takes Five Minutes

1. Connect the old phone to Wi-Fi.
2. Download AlfredCamera on both phones.
3. On the old phone, select “Camera” mode during setup.
4. On your current phone, select “Viewer” mode. Scan the QR code shown on the old phone to pair them.
5. Position the old phone where you want it. I used a phone tripod from the dollar store. A stack of books works too.
6. Plug it into a charger. The old battery will not last overnight otherwise.

Important Considerations Before You Start

Battery safety matters. An old phone plugged in 24/7 can overheat. Position it away from curtains, papers, and direct sunlight. I unplug mine for a few hours once a week to let the battery cycle.

Wi-Fi bandwidth. A streaming camera uses about 1-2 GB of data per month on your home network. It does not use cellular data if it is on Wi-Fi. If your internet has a data cap, check your usage after a week to make sure this is not pushing you over.

Privacy. The app stores motion clips on its servers. Read the privacy policy. I point my camera at the front door and porch — public-facing areas. I would not put one in a bedroom or bathroom even if it is my own house. Old phones can be hacked. Assume anything on a camera could become public.

Better Than a Hundred-Dollar Camera

Dedicated security cameras cost $100 or more and often require monthly subscriptions for cloud storage. AlfredCamera’s free tier keeps motion clips for seven days. That has been enough for me — if something happened I would notice within a week.
