Every October I tell myself I will change the furnace filter before it gets cold. Every October the first cold night arrives, I flip the heat on, and the house fills with that smell of burning dust that means the filter has been collecting stuff since spring. This year I finally put the filter change on my calendar two weeks before I expected to need heat. Shocking discovery: it takes five minutes.

Why the filter matters more than you think

The filter protects your furnace, not your air. A clogged filter makes the blower work harder, the furnace run longer, and your energy bill climb. If the filter is really bad, the furnace can overheat and shut itself off on the coldest night, which is a fantastic way to spend a lot of money on an emergency call. I know because I paid for that lesson once.

How to change it without guessing

1. Find the filter slot. It is usually in the furnace itself or in the return air duct near the blower.
2. Slide the old filter out and check the arrow printed on the frame. The arrow points in the direction of airflow.
3. Write the date on the new filter’s edge with a marker before you install it.
4. Slide it in with the arrow pointing toward the furnace.

How often is often enough

The standard advice is every three months, but I change mine every two months during heating season and at the start of summer for the AC. If you have pets, and I do, check it monthly. Pet hair and dander clog filters shockingly fast. A cheap filter changed often beats an expensive filter changed never, because the expensive ones restrict airflow more when they get dirty.

The marker trick pays off

Writing the date on the filter means I can glance at it and know exactly when it was last changed instead of squinting at a dusty fiberglass rectangle trying to remember. I also buy filters in a three pack so I always have one ready. Five minutes twice a season, no burning dust smell, and my furnace has not scared me since.
