I have a white t-shirt with a coffee stain on the collar. The stain has survived approximately twenty trips through the washing machine. I tried spraying it with Shout before every wash — the stain laughed at me. It wasn’t until my mom visited and brought her stain-fighting arsenal that I learned the real hierarchy of stain removal.

How I tested

I deliberately stained five identical white cotton shirts with: coffee, red wine, grass, tomato sauce, and deodorant residue. Let them set for 48 hours. Then treated each stain with a different product and washed in cold water. Here’s what worked.

The winners

1. OxiClean MaxForce Gel Stick: Best all-around. Removed coffee, wine, and grass completely. Tomato sauce was about 95% gone — faint shadow remained. The gel formula clings to fabric instead of running off. Scrubbing tip on the cap helps work it in. $5 at most stores.
2. Zout Triple Enzyme Formula: Best for protein stains — blood, sweat, food. The enzyme formula literally digests the proteins. Removed deodorant residue better than anything else I tried. $4.
3. Fels-Naptha laundry bar: Old school yellow bar soap. Costs $2. Lasts forever. Best for grease and oil stains. Wet the bar, scrub the stain, wash. Removed set-in collar grime that OxiClean missed. Looks like it was invented in 1893 because it was.

Honorable mentions and disappointments

• Shout Advanced Gel: Works well on fresh stains. Set-in stains, not so much. Fine to keep around but not your heavy hitter.
• Tide To Go pen: Emergency only. Gets out about half of a fresh coffee drip. Useless on anything that’s dried. It’s the first aid kit, not the surgeon.
• Grandma’s Secret Spot Remover: The name is great marketing. The product is fine — maybe 60% effective on set-in stains. Better on fresh ones.

The technique that matters as much as the product

No stain remover works if you dry the garment before the stain is out. Heat sets stains permanently. Always check the stain before putting clothes in the dryer. If you can still see it, treat it again and wash again. Air dry until you’re sure it’s gone.
