My dad has thick toenails, and for years he used the same little drugstore clipper on them. Every time, the nail would either split down the side or the clipper would crush it instead of cutting, and he would end up with a jagged mess.

What makes a clipper good for thick nails

A standard clipper has a thin, shallow jaw that works fine on fingernails but bends or crushes anything thick. Thick nails need a clipper built differently.

• Longer handles. More leverage means you do not have to squeeze hard, which is what causes the crush.
• Sharp, hardened blades. Dull blades tear instead of cut, which is how nails split.
• A straight or slightly curved edge. For thick nails, a straight edge is usually easier to control.

The leverage is the key. When the handles are long enough, you get a clean cut with light pressure, and the nail does not shatter.

The routine that helps

Thick nails are easier to cut when they are softened first. I had my dad soak his feet in warm water for ten minutes before clipping, and it made a real difference, especially with the longer handles doing most of the work.

One honest warning: if your nails are extremely thick, discolored, or painful, that is a job for a podiatrist, not a hardware upgrade. But for ordinary thick nails, a wide jaw clipper with good leverage fixed what years of the wrong tool made miserable.

It is a ten dollar fix for a problem that used to be a monthly frustration.
