What Your Card Usually Covers
Library systems vary, but most of them subscribe to digital services that your card unlocks for free.
- Digital magazines through services like Libby, Flipster, or PressReader. Full current issues, not just old archives.
- Newspapers, including major national ones, often the same day.
- Audiobooks and ebooks, borrowed for a set period just like print.
- Streaming through Kanopy or Hoopla. Films and documentaries.
How to Check What Yours Has
Go to your library system website and look for a digital resources or databases page. It is usually a long list you have never scrolled to. Sign in with your card number and the PIN you set when you registered.
Get the Apps
Install Libby, which most US systems use. Add your library card and it shows you everything available. PressReader is worth checking separately if your system has it, because it covers a huge range of newspapers in full page format.
Between the magazines and the audiobooks, my card saves me more each year than any subscription I have cancelled. It took one trip to the counter to set up.
