The January Kitchen Deep Clean That Makes the Whole Year Easier
January is the only month where cleaning feels like a fresh start instead of a punishment. The holiday cooking is done, the house is quiet, and the kitchen has a year’s worth of grime in places you stopped seeing months ago.
I do one big kitchen reset every January, and it makes the rest of the year easier because the kitchen actually stays cleaner when it starts clean.
The Top Down Rule
Clean from the top down so dust and grime do not fall onto surfaces you already did. My order every year:
- Ceiling vents and the tops of cabinets. Yes, the tops. Get a step stool and look.
- Light fixtures and the range hood. Grease collects there like nothing else.
- Cabinet fronts and handles. The handles are the grossest thing in most kitchens and nobody cleans them.
- Counters, backsplash, then the sink last.
The Places Everyone Forgets
The visible parts of a kitchen get cleaned weekly. The reset is about the parts you forgot existed:
- The crumb tray under the toaster. You have never cleaned this. It is a fire hazard and a mouse buffet.
- Behind the fridge. Pull it out and vacuum the coil. It saves energy and the fridge runs quieter.
- The microwave turntable track. Pop the glass plate off and wipe the little wheels underneath.
- Under the sink. Pull everything out, wipe the cabinet floor, and check for leaks while you are there.
- The utensil drawer dividers. They collect crumbs and stray rice for a year straight.

Degrease the Real Culprits
Kitchen grime is mostly grease, and grease needs a degreaser, not just soap and water. A spray bottle with warm water and a splash of dish soap handles most surfaces. For the range hood and the wall behind the stove, let the spray sit for five minutes before wiping. Letting it sit does half the work.
Do the range hood filter too. Most pop out, soak in hot water with dish soap for twenty minutes, and come out looking new. A grease clogged filter makes the fan work harder and your kitchen smell like last year’s dinners.
Declutter While You Are At It
The reset is also the moment to be honest about the drawer full of random lids and the mug collection that outgrew the cabinet. My rule: if I did not use it in the last year and it is not a holiday special, it goes to the donation box. I filled half a box last January and I have not missed a single item.
Why January Works
Doing this in January matters because the kitchen is at its most cluttered right after the holidays, and starting the year with a clean kitchen sets the tone. I keep a small notebook list of the annual spots, and now the reset takes one morning instead of a whole weekend, because I catch the grease before it becomes archaeology.
📋 Quick Summary: Do one top down kitchen reset each January: clean vents and cabinet tops, degrease the range hood, empty the forgotten spots like the toaster tray and under the sink, and declutter anything unused for a year.
