My sliding screen door came off its track so often that my dog learned to wait for me to fix it before going out. It would pop out at the bottom, hang crooked, and take two hands and a lot of swearing to get back on. I assumed the door was bent and the fix was replacement money.

The fix was a screwdriver, a bottle of lubricant, and about twenty minutes.

Why It Keeps Coming Off

Most sliding screen doors leave the track because of two things: debris in the track, or worn rollers. The bottom wheels get packed with dirt and stop rolling, so the door rides up and hops the track. Fix the rollers and the door stops hopping.

Remove the Door and Clean the Track

Lift the door straight up to clear the track, tilt the bottom out, and set it aside. Vacuum or brush out the track completely. I found a whole dead leaf collection in mine. Wipe the track with a damp cloth and dry it.

Clean or Replace the Rollers

Flip the door over and look at the bottom corners. The rollers are small wheels in brackets, usually held by one screw each. Take them out, clean off the gunk, and spin them to check they turn freely. If they are cracked or frozen, replacement rollers cost a few dollars at a hardware store.

Lubricate the rollers with a silicone spray, never oil, which attracts dirt and makes the problem worse.

Adjust the Height and Put It Back

Most rollers have an adjustment screw that raises or lowers the door. Turn them so the door sits level in the track. Then slide the door back in: top edge into the upper track first, then drop the bottom in and roll it closed.

What I learned the hard way:

• Clean the track twice a year, before summer and before winter
• Do not let the door slam, it knocks the rollers out of alignment
• If the track itself is bent, no amount of roller fixing will help, and you may need a new track

My screen door has stayed on its track for eight months now. The dog still waits by the door, but now he waits because he wants to go out, not because I have to fix it first.
