The store brand liquid costs 12 cents a load for the same job. I did not need a chemistry project, I needed to stop overpaying. Here is what actually cut my laundry costs in half.

Measure, Do Not Guess

The biggest money leak is not the brand, it is the dose. Most people use two to three times more detergent than needed. Modern machines and modern detergents are concentrated, and the cup that comes with the bottle is a trap.

• Use the fill line on the cap, not a heaping cup.
• For a regular load, two tablespoons is plenty. Seriously, that is it.
• If your clothes are not actually dirty, like a load of towels you just want freshened, use half.

Buy Smart, Not Cheap

1. Buy the biggest bottle per ounce. The jumbo size is usually the cheapest per load, even if the sticker price hurts.
2. Check the price per ounce on the shelf tag. Store brands are often the same formula as the name brand at half the price.
3. Wait for sales and stock up. Detergent does not expire fast, so a good sale is a real win.
4. Skip the pods for everyday loads. Pods are the most expensive form of detergent per load.

The Little Things That Add Up

• Wash in cold water. Heating water is most of the energy cost of a load.
• Only run full loads. A half load costs the same as a full one.
• Clean the dispenser drawer now and then. Clogged residue means detergent is not doing its job.

What I Spend Now

I switched to a big bottle of store brand liquid, use two tablespoons per load, and wash cold. My cost per load dropped from 40 cents to about 12. Clothes come out just as clean, and I am saving roughly a hundred dollars a year on detergent alone. No homemade anything required.
