I closed my front door a little too hard one day and the top hinge yanked clean out of the frame, screws and all. I stood there holding the door with one hand, wondering how much a carpenter costs for this exact mess. Then a guy at the hardware store told me about the toothpick trick, and I fixed it in twenty minutes for free.

Why it happened

The screw holes in the frame were stripped. Over the years, the screws had loosened and re-tightened so many times that they carved the wood out. When the door slammed, there was nothing left for the screws to bite into. The fix is to fill those holes so the screws have fresh wood to grab.

The toothpick fix

1. Take the hinge off the frame so you can see the empty holes.
2. Push wooden toothpicks into each hole. Fill them as tight as you can, breaking the toothpicks off flush with the frame.
3. Add a drop of wood glue to each hole so the toothpicks stay put.
4. Wait an hour, then screw the hinge back on. The screws will cut fresh threads into the toothpick wood and hold like new.

A golf tee works even better for bigger holes, just tap it in and snap it off. Matchsticks work too. Anything thin and woody that fills the gap.

When toothpicks are not enough

If the frame is cracked or the hole is huge, upgrade to longer screws. A 3 inch screw reaches past the soft frame and into the framing stud behind it, which is solid wood. This is the fix that actually saved my front door. The toothpicks got it working again, but the longer screws made it permanent.

Stop it from happening again

Do not slam the door, obviously, but also check the hinge screws once a year and tighten any that are loose before they strip. I also added a soft close hinge, so the door cannot slam hard enough to pull screws out again.

My front door has been solid for a year now. The toothpick trick cost me nothing, and the longer screws cost about two dollars. Way cheaper than a carpenter.
