How to Clean Yellowed Plastic Appliances Back to White
That yellow tint on an old coffee maker or rice cooker is not dirt. It is the plastic itself changing color, and no amount of soap will fix it.
I almost threw out my mom’s old blender because it had gone yellow. Then I learned the color comes from oxidation, and there is a simple way to reverse it.
Why plastic turns yellow
Sunlight, heat, and age make the plastic oxidize. The yellow is baked into the surface layer, so regular cleaners cannot touch it. You need something that works on the plastic itself.
The peroxide paste method
Mix hydrogen peroxide with baking soda into a thick paste. Spread it over the yellowed plastic, cover it with plastic wrap so it does not dry out, and leave it in the sun for a few hours. The sunlight activates the peroxide and lifts the yellow.

Soak the small parts
If the appliance comes apart, soak the plastic pieces in a bowl of hydrogen peroxide overnight. This works wonders for yellowed lids, buttons, and vents. Rinse well and dry before reassembling.
Use a magic eraser first
For light yellowing, a damp magic eraser sometimes does the job in minutes. It is mildly abrasive, so test it on a hidden spot first. For deeper yellow, go straight to the peroxide.
Skip the bleach
Bleach can make plastic worse. It can whiten the surface while the yellow stays underneath, or it can weaken the plastic. Hydrogen peroxide is safer and works better.
Prevent it from coming back
Keep appliances away from direct sun and heat sources. A cabinet or a towel over the top helps a lot. The yellow comes back slower when the plastic is not baked by sunlight.
My mom’s blender is white again after one afternoon in the sun with a peroxide paste. She asked what I did, and now her kitchen looks ten years newer.
