I make tea three times a day, which means I boil water three times a day, which means I have strong opinions about kettles. So I tried three electric kettles at three price points and timed them all boiling the same amount of water.

The boil test

Same tap water, same starting temperature, full pot each time, timed to a rolling boil. The results surprised me. The most expensive kettle was not the fastest. The difference between the fastest and slowest was under a minute, which sounds small until you’re waiting on it before work every morning.

What actually mattered

• The wattage mattered more than the price. A higher-wattage mid-price kettle beat a pricier low-wattage one.
• How much water you boil matters most. Boiling only what you need saves more time than any kettle upgrade.
• The spout made the real difference. A precise pour matters for pour-over coffee and means no dribble down the side.

What I’d tell a friend

• If you only make tea for yourself, buy a smaller kettle. A one-liter boils noticeably faster than a big one.
• Look for a “keep warm” setting if you drink slowly. It’s worth it.
• Skip the app-connected ones. You’ll never open the app to boil water.

I kept the mid-price, high-wattage one. Fast, clean pour, and it didn’t come with an app I’d ignore.
