Behind my desk there is a pile of black cables, and for months I solved every problem the same way: unplug things one at a time until the right one went dead. It was a terrible system, and I finally got sick of it.

The fix was not buying a fancy cable organizer. It was a roll of tape and a marker. Here is how to label your cables so you never guess again.

The simple system

Take a small piece of masking tape or a flag label and wrap it around each cable near the plug, leaving a little flag sticking out. Write on the flag what the cable powers: “router,” “monitor,” “lamp,” “laptop charger.”

Do it at both ends of the cable. That way, when you are crawling behind the desk or the TV stand, you can read the label no matter which end you grab.

Better than tape

Masking tape works and costs nothing, but it leaves residue over time and the writing fades. If you want something that lasts, use:

• Cable flag labels, the little self-adhesive tags made for this exact job.
• Bread tags with the name written on them.
• Washi tape, which comes off clean and comes in colors you can color-code.

Color coding is the upgrade. One color for power, one for data, one for chargers. Then you do not even need to read the label, just match the color.

Bundle as you go

Once everything is labeled, wrap each cable in a loose loop and secure it with a twist tie or a reusable cable tie. Do not coil them tight, which can damage the wires inside over time. Loose loops only.

It took me half an hour to do the whole desk. Now when the internet drops, I know exactly which plug to check. That is the kind of small win that feels way better than it should.
