Simple Trick to Remember to Take Your Vitamins Every Day

I bought a bottle of vitamin D last November. It’s now August and I’ve taken maybe twenty of them. The bottle stares at me from the kitchen counter every morning and I walk right past it.

The problem wasn’t the vitamins. It was that “take vitamins” wasn’t attached to anything — it was a floating intention that never found a home in my actual day. Once I attached it to something I already do without thinking, I stopped forgetting.

Stack it onto an existing habit

This is called habit stacking. You take something you already do automatically and chain the new habit to it. For me, that thing was making coffee. While the coffee brews, I take my vitamins. Now the sound of the coffee maker triggers the vitamin habit without any extra effort.

Find your anchor. It needs to be something you do every single day at roughly the same time. Brushing your teeth. Feeding your pet. Making breakfast. Opening your laptop. Chain the vitamins to that anchor and do them together every time.

Make them visible

I moved the vitamin bottle from the cabinet to directly next to the coffee maker. If it’s in a cabinet, it doesn’t exist. Our brains are lazy about remembering things they can’t see.

I also use a weekly pill organizer. Yes, the kind that makes you feel elderly. But here’s the thing: when the Tuesday compartment is empty, I know I took Tuesday’s vitamins. When it’s still full at 2pm, I know I forgot. It’s a visual log. No more “did I take them or did I just think about taking them?”

Phone reminders work until they don’t

I tried phone reminders. For about three days they worked. Then I started dismissing them automatically. “I’ll take them in a minute.” Then I wouldn’t. Then the notification was gone and so was the intention.

Phone reminders are good as a backup, not as the primary system. Set one for a time when you know you’ll be near your vitamins — maybe mid-morning, after your anchor habit should have happened. If you already took them, dismiss it. If you didn’t, it’s your safety net.

I’ve taken my vitamins every day for three months now. The coffee maker does the remembering. I just do what the coffee maker tells me, which is maybe a weird dynamic but it’s working.

📋 Quick Summary: Attach taking vitamins to an existing daily habit like making coffee. Keep them visible — next to the coffee maker, not in a cabinet. Use a weekly pill organizer so you can see whether you took today’s dose. Phone reminders work better as a backup than a primary system.
