The Spoon Trick for Checking If You Actually Need Deodorant
I used to put on deodorant every single morning without thinking about it. Grab the stick, swipe, done. Then a dermatologist at a routine appointment mentioned offhand that about two percent of people of European descent do not actually produce underarm odor — they have a genetic variant that means their sweat lacks the compounds bacteria feed on.
I stared at him. “How do I know if I am one of those people?”
He told me about the spoon test. It took thirty seconds and the answer was — well. I was not one of those people. But I was wearing way too much deodorant.

The ABCC11 Gene
Body odor does not come from sweat itself. Sweat is mostly water and salt and is odorless. The smell comes from bacteria on your skin breaking down proteins and fats in the sweat. A non-functional variant of the ABCC11 gene means your sweat lacks those proteins and fats. No food for bacteria, no smell. This variant is common in East Asian populations — up to ninety percent in some groups — and rare in European and African populations.
But even if you have the gene, you might still be using too much product.
The Spoon Test
- Take a clean metal spoon. Stainless steel is best — no coating that could interfere.
- Scrape the back of the spoon gently across your underarm at the end of a normal day. Before you shower, before you apply product. You want a sample of your actual skin.
- Smell the spoon. Not your armpit directly — the spoon. Your nose adapts to your own scent and becomes blind to it. The spoon gives you an objective sample.
If the spoon smells like nothing or just faintly salty, you do not need heavy-duty antiperspirant. A light deodorant or even nothing at all might be fine. If it smells strong or unpleasant, you already knew that and the spoon just confirmed it.
What I Learned About Myself
I do produce odor — the spoon told me that clearly. But I also discovered that the clinical-strength stuff I was using was overkill. I switched to a basic deodorant without antiperspirant and it worked just fine. My shirts stopped getting those stiff white stains in the armpits too, because there was no aluminum to react with my laundry detergent.
I cannot believe a dermatologist told me to smell a spoon. I also cannot believe it was useful advice.
📋 Quick Summary: Scrape a clean metal spoon across your underarm at the end of the day and smell it. Your nose is blind to your own scent — the spoon is objective. A non-functional ABCC11 gene variant means no body odor at all, common in East Asian populations.
