Growing up, our Christmas tree was a fire hazard by December 20th. Needles everywhere. The bottom branches looked like a broom. My dad would crawl under the tree with a watering can, dumping water on the stand and mostly missing the reservoir because he could not see what he was aiming at.

Years later I learned two tricks that keep a tree fresh well past New Year’s. One involves a fresh cut. The other involves a watering gadget that costs three dollars.

The Fresh Cut That Matters

When you bring your tree home, cut one inch off the bottom of the trunk before you put it in the stand. Even if the lot says they just cut it. The sap seals the cut within hours of the first saw — a tree with a sealed trunk cannot drink water, no matter how full the stand is.

Make the cut straight across, not angled. A flat cut sits stably on the bottom of the stand, and the surface area for water absorption is the same either way.

The Funnel-and-Tube Watering System

Stick a three-foot length of clear plastic tubing (half-inch diameter, from any hardware store) into the tree stand reservoir. Route the other end up through the branches and secure it to the trunk with a zip tie. Attach a small funnel to the top end.

Now you water the tree by pouring into the funnel at eye level instead of crawling under the branches. You can see the water level in the tubing. No more guessing. No more spilling. The tree gets watered every day because it is not a hassle to do it.

What to Put in the Water

Plain water. That is it. Do not add sugar, aspirin, bleach, vodka, or any of the other things people suggest online. The National Christmas Tree Association has tested all of them — plain tap water keeps a tree fresh longer than any additive. The tree just needs water. Lots of it. A fresh tree can drink a gallon a day for the first week.
