Is Your Mattress Too Firm After Years of Use? A Topper Might Save You a Thousand Dollars
My mattress is old. Fifteen years old. The kind of old where there is a permanent body-shaped depression in the middle and the edges are still firm because nobody sleeps there. I kept putting off replacing it because a decent mattress costs eight hundred to fifteen hundred dollars and I had other things to spend that money on.
Then a friend suggested a mattress topper. “It will not fix a broken mattress,” he said, “but if yours is just old and uncomfortable, a thick topper can buy you another three to five years.” He was right.

The Three Types of Toppers and Who They Are For
Memory foam (3-4 inches thick): Best for people who want to sink in. Memory foam contours to your body and relieves pressure points — hips and shoulders especially. The trade-off: it traps heat. If you sleep hot, get a gel-infused or copper-infused memory foam topper, which dissipates heat better than standard memory foam.
Latex: Best for people who want support without sinking. Latex is bouncier than memory foam and sleeps much cooler. It is also more durable — a good latex topper can last a decade. The trade-off: it is heavier, more expensive, and has a distinct rubber smell for the first few days.
Down-alternative or fiberfill: Best for adding softness on a budget. These are basically thick pillowtop pads. They add comfort but do not change the underlying feel of the mattress. If your mattress is too firm, a fiberfill topper will not fix that. If it is just slightly uncomfortable, it might be enough.
What Thickness Actually Means
Two inches of memory foam adds plushness. It softens the surface without changing how the mattress supports you. Three inches starts to change the feel of the bed — you sink deeper and the topper takes over more of the support role. Four inches essentially becomes the new sleep surface. For an old mattress that has lost its top comfort layer, I recommend at least three inches. Two inches will not mask a fifteen-year-old mattress.
The Unexpected Benefit
The topper also evened out the body impression in the middle of my mattress. The foam filled the dip enough that I stopped rolling into the center. It is not a permanent fix — the underlying mattress is still sagging — but the topper made it comfortable enough that I stopped waking up with a sore back. That bought me enough time to save up for a real replacement without rushing into a bad purchase.
Quick Summary: A 3-4 inch memory foam or latex mattress topper can add 3-5 years to an aging mattress — choose memory foam for pressure relief and contouring, latex for cooler sleep and durability, and go at least 3 inches thick for meaningful improvement.
