Clean Your Dishwasher So It Actually Cleans Your Dishes
You know that moment when you open the dishwasher and a glass comes out with a cloudy film and a faint odor? I ignored that for about a year. I kept adding more detergent, running longer cycles, blaming my cheap dishwasher. Then a repair guy came for a different issue and asked, “When was the last time you cleaned this thing?”
I did not know you were supposed to clean a cleaning machine. It seems obvious now.
A dirty dishwasher recirculates food particles and mineral buildup onto your dishes. The filter gets clogged. The spray arms get blocked. Hot water and detergent cannot fix a machine that is full of gunk.

Step 1: The Filter (Do This Today)
Most people do not know their dishwasher has a filter. It does. It sits at the bottom, under the lower spray arm, and it catches food particles so they do not clog the drain pump.
Twist it counterclockwise and pull it out. The first time I did this, the filter was coated in a gray sludge that smelled like a wet dog. I nearly gagged. Rinse it under hot water and scrub with an old toothbrush and dish soap until the mesh is clean. Pop it back in and twist to lock.
Do this once a month. If you have never done it, do it right now before reading the rest of this.
Step 2: The Spray Arms
The spinning arms that spray water have tiny holes that get clogged with mineral deposits and food bits. If a hole is blocked, that section of the rack does not get cleaned.
Remove the arms (they usually snap or twist off — check your manual). Use a toothpick or paperclip to clear each hole. Run water through the arm to flush out loose debris. Reattach and make sure they spin freely.
Step 3: The Vinegar Cycle
Once the filter and spray arms are clean, run an empty cycle with white vinegar. Place a dishwasher-safe bowl filled with one cup of white vinegar on the top rack. Run a hot wash cycle — no detergent, no dishes.
The vinegar dissolves mineral buildup, cuts through soap scum, and deodorizes. Your dishwasher will smell neutral instead of musty.
Do not put vinegar in the detergent dispenser — the acid can damage rubber seals over time. The bowl on the rack is the safe way.
Step 4: The Door Seal
The rubber gasket around the door collects grime. Wipe it down with a cloth and white vinegar. If it is moldy — which happens in humid climates — scrub with a toothbrush dipped in diluted bleach solution, then rinse thoroughly.
I do the whole routine the first Sunday of every month. Filter, spray arms, vinegar cycle, door seal. It takes 15 minutes. My glasses come out clear now and the faint smell is gone.
📋 Quick Summary: Clean the filter monthly (hot water + toothbrush), clear spray arm holes with a toothpick, run an empty vinegar cycle, and wipe the door seal. Your dishwasher will actually clean your dishes again.
