I shrank a cashmere sweater down to what looked like doll clothes. It was a gift. I felt terrible. Dryer on medium — rookie mistake — and out came something that would barely fit a cat. I almost threw it away. My coworker told me about the conditioner trick and I laughed at her. Then I tried it. It worked.

Why Wool Shrinks (and Why Conditioner Fixes It)

Wool fibers have microscopic scales, like shingles on a roof. Heat and agitation make those scales lock together — this is felting, not just shrinking. The fibers physically grab each other and will not let go.

Hair conditioner contains the same ingredients that smooth human hair cuticles. When you soak shrunken wool in conditioner water, the conditioner relaxes those locked scales, letting the fibers slide apart again. You still have to stretch the garment back to size manually, but the conditioner makes the fibers willing to move.

Step by Step

1. Fill a sink or bucket with lukewarm water — not hot, not cold.
2. Add a generous squirt of hair conditioner — roughly a tablespoon per gallon of water. Any cheap conditioner works.
3. Submerge the sweater and let it soak for at least 30 minutes. An hour is better.
4. Drain the water. Do not wring the sweater. Gently press out excess water against the side of the sink.
5. Lay the sweater flat on a dry towel. Roll the towel up like a burrito and press to remove more water.
6. Now the stretching part: lay it on a fresh dry towel. Gently pull and shape it back to its original dimensions. Focus on length first, then width. Wool stretches more when wet than you would expect.
7. Let it dry flat. Check and re-stretch every hour as it dries — wool has a memory and will try to creep back.

My cashmere came back to about 90% of its original size. Wearable. Not doll-sized. I call that a win.
