I Cleaned My Oven Overnight Without Scrubbing Once

My oven was embarrassing. I am talking black crust on the bottom, brown splatter on the door window, and a smell that filled the kitchen every time I preheated to 400. I avoided roasting anything that might drip because I did not want to deal with the smoke alarm.

I also refused to use the self-clean cycle. A repair guy once told me it heats your oven to 900 degrees and can blow the thermal fuse. He said about 30% of his service calls were from self-clean cycles. Not worth the risk.

So I tried the baking soda method. Zero scrubbing. I am not exaggerating.

What You Need

  • Baking soda — about half a cup
  • Water
  • A small bowl
  • White vinegar (for the final wipe-down)
  • A spray bottle (optional but helpful)
  • Rubber gloves
  • A damp cloth or sponge

The Process

  1. Make a paste. Mix baking soda with just enough water to make a spreadable paste — like thick pancake batter. Not runny.
  2. Coat the interior. Spread the paste over every dirty surface inside the oven. Avoid the heating elements and the oven light. The glass door too — coat it.
  3. Walk away. Let it sit for at least 8 hours. I do this before bed and deal with it in the morning. The baking soda needs time to break down the grease.
  4. Wipe it out. In the morning, the paste will have turned brown and crusty — that is the grease it absorbed. Wipe it all out with a damp cloth.
  5. Vinegar finish. Spray white vinegar over any remaining baking soda residue. It will fizz. Wipe once more with a clean damp cloth.

What I Found in the Morning

The black crust that I had assumed was permanently baked into the enamel wiped away like mud. The glass door — which I had accepted as permanently foggy — was clear. I could see through it. I had forgotten the oven door was even transparent.

One stubborn spot on the bottom took a second overnight treatment. That was it. Zero scrubbing. Zero harsh chemicals. Zero fear of the thermal fuse exploding.

I now do this every three months. It is so low-effort that I actually stick to the schedule. My smoke alarm has been silent for a year.

📋 Quick Summary: Coat the oven interior with a baking soda paste before bed. Wipe it out in the morning — the grease comes with it. Spray vinegar to remove residue. No scrubbing, no harsh chemicals, no risk to your oven.
