The Water Bottle Trick That Keeps Me Drinking All Day
I kept a water bottle on my desk for a year and still ended every day slightly dehydrated. The bottle was not the problem. I just never picked it up.
Make It Visible and Within Reach
If the bottle is in a bag or behind your monitor, you will forget it. It has to be in your line of sight and you should be able to reach it without standing up. That sounds trivial but it is most of the fix.

The Marked Bottle
Take a permanent marker and draw a couple of target lines on the side with times next to them. One by noon, one by the end of the workday. A visible goal is far easier to hit than the vague instruction to drink more water.
Smaller Bottle, More Refills
A giant bottle sounds efficient. In practice, a big bottle of warm water sitting there all afternoon is unappealing. A smaller bottle that you empty and refill three or four times gets you drinking more, because every refill is fresh and cool, and it gives you a reason to stand up.
Habits That Stack
- Drink a full glass with every meal. This is the easiest one.
- Refill whenever you get up for any other reason.
- Set a recurring reminder if you genuinely forget. Not a lecture, just a nudge.
I also keep a glass by the bathroom sink and drink one every time I brush my teeth. Silly, but it adds up to about a liter a day on its own.
📋 Quick Summary: Keep the bottle in sight and in reach, mark time targets on it, and use a smaller bottle so you refill more often.
