Is your phone getting warm enough that you notice it in your pocket, even when you are not using it?

A phone has no fan. It dumps heat into its own frame, which means the case you bought to protect it also works as a blanket.

The common causes

• Charging while doing something demanding. Fast charging plus a game or a video call is the worst combination there is.
• A case that traps heat, especially thick rubber or leather. Take it off and the phone runs measurably cooler.
• Direct sun. A phone on a car dashboard on a sunny day can hit shutdown temperature in 10 minutes.
• A background app stuck in a loop. This is the one people miss, and it is usually the real cause of a phone that gets hot while idle.

Cool it down now

1. Take the case off.
2. Close every app and stop charging.
3. Turn on airplane mode for two minutes. Radios are a major heat source and this shuts all of them off at once.
4. Move it off soft surfaces and onto a hard counter so air can reach it.

What not to do

Do not put a hot phone in the refrigerator or freezer. Condensation forms inside and that is how you turn a warm phone into a dead one.

Do not use a cooling app. It is advertising, not engineering. The only real levers are the radios, the screen, and the processor load.

Find the culprit app

Check the battery screen in settings and sort by usage. An app with high background time and no screen time is your problem. Force stop it, then update or uninstall it.

If the phone still runs hot after a full restart with the case off and nothing open, the battery may be failing. That is worth a diagnostic at a repair shop.

Everyday habits

Charge overnight with the case off if you can. Do not leave it plugged in on a car seat or a bed. And keep it out of the sun, which sounds obvious until you see a phone on a windowsill in July.
