My aunt visited once, looked at my laundry basket, and asked why I was washing the basket itself every month. I told her I was not. She pointed at the gray film on the inside bottom and said that is fabric softener and dirt that never got rinsed. Then she showed me her liner trick and I have not scrubbed a basket since.

The problem with bare baskets

Dirty clothes sit against the basket, and whatever is on them ends up on the basket. Detergent residue, sweat, pet hair, crumbs from pockets. Over time it builds into a film that you then rub onto your clean laundry. A liner makes the basket easy to clean without cleaning the basket.

What to use as a liner

You do not need to buy anything. Any of these work:

• An old fitted sheet draped inside, corners tucked over the rim. This is my favorite because the elastic grips the basket.
• A large pillowcase for smaller baskets.
• An old shower curtain liner cut to size, if you want something wipeable.

With the fitted sheet version, laundry day works like this: lift the whole sheet out, carry it to the washer, tip the clothes in, and toss the sheet in with the load. It gets washed at the same time, so there is zero extra work.

What changed

The basket itself stays clean because the liner catches everything. I still wipe the basket down every month or so, but it is a two minute job now instead of a scrub session. My aunt also taught me to shake out pockets before tossing clothes in, because the paper tissues and pens are what really make a basket nasty.

One more thing: do not let wet towels sit in the basket for days. Even with a liner, trapped moisture will smell. Wet stuff goes straight to the washer or hangs to dry first.

It is a ten second change to how I use the basket and it ended a chore I hated.
