How to Fix a Leaky Garden Hose Connector
Every spring I drag the garden hose out, screw it onto the spigot, and immediately get a spray of water up my arm. The connector leaks where the hose meets the faucet, so I would tighten it harder, which made it leak more, because I was fighting the wrong problem.
If your hose leaks at the connection, the fix is almost always a fifty cent rubber washer. Not a new hose. Not a new connector. A washer.
How to tell what is wrong
Look at the end of the hose that screws onto the spigot. Inside the brass or plastic fitting, there should be a small rubber washer sitting flat at the base. Over time these washers dry out, crack, or just fall out when the hose gets dragged around. Without the washer, there is nothing to seal the joint, so water sprays out no matter how tight you go.
Unscrew the connector and look. If you see no washer, or a flattened, cracked one, that is your leak.
The fix in two minutes
- Pry the old washer out with a small screwdriver or your fingernail.
- Take it to the hardware store and match it, or buy a pack of assorted hose washers for a couple of dollars.
- Press the new washer flat into the bottom of the fitting.
- Screw the hose back on hand tight, then give it a quarter turn with pliers if needed.
Turn the water on. If the leak is gone, you just saved yourself a trip to buy a new hose. If it still drips, the threads on the spigot may be worn, and a thread tape wrap around the connector threads usually finishes the job.
Other leaky spots to check
A leak at the spray nozzle end usually means the washer inside the nozzle is gone, and the same assorted pack fixes it. A leak where the hose meets the metal fitting, in the middle of the run, means the hose itself is failing there, and that one does need a new hose or a repair coupling.
Keep the washer pack in the garage with your other small parts. I have fixed three hoses, two nozzles, and a neighbor’s spigot connection with the same five dollar pack.
One more habit that helps: disconnect hoses in winter and store them inside. Frozen water expands and cracks fittings, which starts the whole leak cycle next spring.
