How to Clean a Greasy Range Hood Filter With One Ingredient
I will be honest with you. I cooked under a greasy range hood filter for about a year before I learned the filter was even removable. When I finally pulled it down, I stared at it for a solid ten seconds. It looked less like a filter and more like a science experiment.
Why you have been avoiding this
Spray-on degreasers are nasty. They smell like a chemical factory and you have to scrub until your arms hurt. So most people do what I did and just never clean the filter. The grease builds up, the fan gets louder, and your kitchen exhaust quietly stops doing its job.
The fix only needs one ingredient: boiling water. No spray, no fumes, almost no scrubbing.
How to do it
- Take the metal mesh filter out of the hood. Most slide out or have a simple latch.
- Fill your biggest pot or a deep roasting pan with water and bring it to a rolling boil.
- Lower the filter in carefully. Let it simmer for about fifteen minutes.
- Pull it out with tongs, run it under hot water, and wipe it with a sponge.
The heat melts the grease right off the mesh. What is left rinses away in seconds. I have cleaned mine three times this way and I have never needed a single drop of degreaser.

Small things I learned
If your filter has not been cleaned in a very long time, the water will look like soup when you are done. That is a good sign. It means the grease is leaving.
Do the same soak for the little metal baffle pieces if your hood uses those instead of a mesh sheet. Same result.
Do not boil a filter that has any plastic parts. If you see plastic clips or a plastic frame, stick to very hot water from the tap and a long soak instead.
Make it a habit
I now drop my filter in boiling water on the first Sunday of every month while I am already making coffee. Fifteen minutes of simmer, two minutes of wiping, done. The hood sounds quieter, the kitchen smells cleaner, and I stopped pretending the filter was decoration.
📋 Quick Summary: Soak a metal range hood filter in boiling water for fifteen minutes once a month, wipe off the melted grease, and skip chemical degreasers entirely.
