The bottle tipped over while I was reaching for the remote. Hot pink nail polish, white carpet, and a splash pattern that looked like a tiny crime scene. I panicked for about ten seconds, then remembered the one product that actually fixes this: nail polish remover.

Act fast, but do not rub

Speed matters more than anything when polish hits carpet. The longer it sits, the deeper it soaks into the fibers. Grab a clean white cloth or paper towel and blot the spill gently to lift the wet polish. Do not rub. Rubbing grinds the color deeper into the carpet and spreads the stain wider.

The acetone trick

Plain acetone nail polish remover dissolves dried and fresh polish alike. Test it on a hidden corner of the carpet first because acetone can affect some dyes and synthetic fibers. If the test spot is fine, dab a cloth with acetone and blot the stain from the outside in. Work in small circles toward the center so the polish does not spread. The color should lift onto the cloth within a minute or two.

What to do when it has already dried

If you found the stain an hour later, do not panic. Dried polish still comes out with acetone, it just needs a little more patience. Soak the spot with acetone, let it sit for thirty seconds to soften the polish, then blot. You may need to repeat this a few times. The polish softens and pulls free from the fibers layer by layer.

After the polish is gone

Once the color is lifted, blot the area with warm soapy water to remove the acetone residue, then blot dry and vacuum once the carpet is fully dry. If a faint tint remains, a dab of dish soap mixed with water usually finishes the job.

One more thing: never grab the first random chemical you see. Some cleaners can set the stain or damage the carpet. Acetone is the right tool because it dissolves the polish itself instead of just pushing it around. My carpet survived the pink incident with zero trace, and now the polish bottle lives in a drawer instead of on the table.
