I once found three nearly full bottles of glass cleaner under my sink. Three. Same brand, same size, none of them finished. That is when I realized cleaning products do not multiply by themselves, I keep buying them because I cannot see what I already own.

The one-in-one-out rule

The fix is boring and it works: one category of cleaner gets one spot, and a new bottle only comes in when the old one leaves. One all-purpose spray, one glass cleaner, one bathroom scrub. If you bring home a new product, an old one has to go. This single rule cut my cleaning stash by more than half and stopped the duplicate buying completely.

Give every bottle a home

The reason duplicates pile up is that the cabinet is a black hole. Fix that with simple zones. Keep daily-use cleaners in front, heavy-duty stuff in the back, and anything you reach for less than once a month in a separate bin. When every product has a designated spot, a quick glance tells you exactly what you need from the store.

Ask yourself the honest question

Before you buy another cleaner, ask whether it does something your current ones cannot. Most of the time the answer is no. A basic all-purpose cleaner plus a degreaser handles ninety percent of the house. Specialty products are fine, but they should earn their cabinet space by actually getting used.

What to do with the extras

When you declutter, do not dump everything down the drain. Many cleaning products should not go into the septic system or municipal water without thought. Check if your town has a household hazardous waste drop-off, or give unopened bottles to a neighbor or a local charity that can use them. Keep only what you genuinely reach for.

My under-sink cabinet went from a messy pile of thirty bottles to about eight that all earn their keep. I know exactly what I have, I stopped wasting money on doubles, and cleaning takes less time because I am not digging for the right spray.
