The Plant Watering Bulb That Kept My Fern Alive While I Was Gone
I left for a ten day trip last summer fully expecting to come home to a dead fern. My watering schedule is unreliable even when I am home. But I had bought a pack of glass watering bulbs on a whim, so I stuck one in the pot before I left.
I came back to a fern that looked better than when I left. I have been a believer since.
What These Bulbs Are
A watering bulb is a glass globe with a long stem. You fill it with water, push the stem into the soil, and it slowly releases water as the soil dries. It is self watering without any electronics.
They cost about $10 for a pack of four. Cheap enough that buying a set to test is a no brainer.
How It Worked for Me
I filled the bulb with water, pushed it into the fern pot until the stem was buried, and tested it for a week before my trip. The soil stayed evenly moist the whole time, no soggy puddle, no bone dry crust.
The fern drank the full bulb over about nine days. When I got home, the bulb was nearly empty and the plant was thriving.
What They Are Good For
They shine for plants that like consistent moisture, like ferns, peace lilies, and herbs. They are also perfect for vacation coverage when you will be gone a week or two.
I now use one in my peace lily all the time, not just when I travel. It smoothed out my overwatering and underwatering swings, and the plant stopped dropping leaves.
What They Are Not Good For
They do not work well for succulents and cacti, which want to dry out completely. They also cannot handle more than about a week or two of water, so a month long trip still needs a plan.
The release rate depends on soil and temperature. In hot rooms they drain faster, in cool rooms slower. Test it once before you rely on it for a trip.
The Verdict
For the price, these bulbs are one of the best little plant gadgets you can buy. They are not a miracle, but they solve the exact problem of keeping moisture loving plants alive through a short trip.
My fern survived, my peace lily is happier, and I stopped asking neighbors to water my plants. Worth every dollar of the ten bucks.

📋 Quick Summary: Glass watering bulbs slowly release water as soil dries. Great for ferns and peace lilies over a week or two. Skip them for succulents.
