Scraping candle wax off carpet is the wrong move. Heat is the right one. I learned this the hard way after knocking a candle off the coffee table during a party and panicking with a butter knife. The knife shredded the carpet fibers and made everything worse. There is a better way, and it takes about ten minutes.

The Freeze Method

Wax gets hard and brittle when it is cold, which makes it much easier to break up:

1. Hold a bag of frozen vegetables or an ice cube wrapped in a cloth on the wax for a couple of minutes.
2. Once the wax is firm, gently flick or snap it off with your fingers.
3. Vacuum up the little pieces.

This works great for big drips. The cold makes the wax shrink just enough to pop off the carpet fibers.

The Iron and Paper Towel Method

For wax that has soaked in deeper or left a greasy stain, heat is your friend:

1. Place a plain paper towel or brown paper bag over the wax.
2. Run a warm iron over the paper, no steam.
3. The wax melts and soaks into the paper instead of the carpet.
4. Move to a clean section of paper and repeat until nothing transfers.

Warm, not hot. Too much heat can melt synthetic carpet fibers, and then you have a real problem instead of a wax spot.

What to Do If You Skip Ahead

If you already scraped and left frayed fibers, do not panic. Use a butter knife handle to gently rub the fibers back together while they are slightly damp. It will not be invisible, but it will be way less obvious than the raw scrape.

For colored candles, the waxy part comes off clean but the dye can leave a tint behind. Treat that like any stain: blot with dish soap and warm water, then blot dry. Do not rub. Rubbing spreads the color.

One more thing: test the iron trick on a hidden corner of the carpet first. Some synthetic carpets are more sensitive to heat than others. Ten seconds of testing beats ten minutes of explaining to your landlord.
