How to Fix a Leaky Sink Sprayer Hose in Five Minutes

My kitchen sprayer started leaking at the base, right where the hose meets the spray head. I called a plumber and the quote was more than I wanted to pay for a five minute job. So I watched a couple of videos, bought a two dollar part, and fixed it myself.
Most sprayer leaks are a worn rubber washer or o-ring, not a broken hose. The fix is embarrassingly easy.
What You Need
You need a replacement o-ring or washer that fits your sprayer, some plumber tape, and a wrench. Take the old part with you to the hardware store so you match the size, or check the model number on the sprayer.
The Five Minute Fix
- Shut off the water supply under the sink, or close the main valve if there is no shutoff
- Unscrew the spray head from the hose. It usually twists off by hand, or with a wrench if it is stuck
- Pull out the old o-ring or washer and check it for cracks and flattening. That flattened ring is your leak
- Wrap the threads with plumber tape, slide on the new ring, and screw everything back together
- Turn the water back on and test
Do not overtighten. The rubber ring does the sealing, not the wrench. Snug is enough, and overtightening squashes the new ring into the same leak.
When It Is Not the Ring
If the leak is in the middle of the hose and not at the connection, the hose itself is cracked. Replacement hoses are cheap and they connect with two fittings. It takes about ten minutes and a couple of wrenches.
One more tip: rubber o-rings wear out every couple of years no matter what. Keep a spare in the drawer under the sink and the next leak takes ninety seconds.
