I used to dump everything into one hamper and then sort it on laundry day. Whites, darks, delicates, all of it in one pile on the floor, which my cat immediately claimed as a bed. Sorting day took twice as long as it should have, and I hated it.

The hamper I use has three separate compartments: one for darks, one for lights, one for delicates. The sorting happens when you toss the clothes in, not on laundry day. Laundry day becomes grab-a-bag and go. It sounds trivial, but it cut my laundry time almost in half.

What to look for

Not all sorters are equal. Look for three things: removable bags, a sturdy frame, and a lid or cover. The removable bags matter most because you carry them straight to the machine. A frame that collapses when empty is nice for small spaces. Skip the fabric-only sorters that flop over when half full, because they are annoying from day one.

Where it works best

The sorter lives in the bedroom in my house, but a lot of people put theirs in the laundry room or hallway. Put it where the clothes come off, not where the washer is. If the hamper is near the bedroom, the clothes actually make it into the hamper instead of onto the floor. That alone was worth the switch.

What I would change

Nothing is perfect. The frame on mine wobbles a little when it is full, and the bags get a smell if I forget to wash them monthly. The solution was throwing the bags in with the laundry once a month, which takes two minutes. Not a dealbreaker.

Is it worth it?

If you live alone and do laundry twice a month, maybe a single hamper is fine. If you have a family, or if sorting drives you crazy, the three-compartment sorter is worth every penny. Mine was under forty dollars, and it has saved me hours of sorting over the past year. The cat lost her bed, but she found the laundry room towels, so she is fine.
