Nothing ruins a good day like climbing into a car that feels like an oven. Last summer I got in once and the seatbelt buckle burned my arm. After that I learned the one move that actually cools a car down fast.
Why rolling the windows is not enough
Parked cars trap heat, and the air inside gets hotter than the air outside. Opening a window helps a little, but the hot air just sits there unless you force it out.
The fastest method
- Roll down the passenger side front window.
- Walk around and open and shut the driver side door five or six times.
- This pushes the hot air out and pulls cooler air in.
It looks a little silly in a parking lot, but it drops the inside temperature fast. Then crank the AC with the windows up and you are comfortable in a minute or two.
What makes it worse
A windshield shade makes a real difference for how hot the car gets in the first place. I used to skip it because it felt fussy, then I measured a twenty degree difference on a ninety degree day. Now the shade goes up every single time.
Also, park facing away from the sun when you can, and crack the windows a half inch if the spot is safe.
