Declutter Your Closet Using the Hanger Reversal Method
My sister swore by this method, and I ignored her for a year. Then I counted the shirts I actually wore in a month and realized it was maybe eight, in a closet of sixty. The hanger trick told me the truth in one afternoon.
How the hanger reversal method works
- Turn every hanger in your closet so the hook faces the back.
- When you wear something, put it back with the hook facing the front.
- After three months, the backward hangers are the clothes you never touched.

No guessing. No emotional debate in front of the mirror. The hooks do the remembering for you.
What I found
After three months, about forty hangers had not moved. Some were gifts I felt guilty about, others were sizes I hoped to fit into again. Seeing the number made it easy to donate the lot.
I kept one dress I had worn once for a wedding, but everything else with a backward hook went into a bag. My closet now only holds clothes I reach for, and getting dressed in the morning takes half the time.
You can run the same system on your drawers with a folded-in-half trick for shirts.
📋 Quick Summary: Flip all hangers backward and only flip them forward when you wear an item; after a few months, donate what never moved.
