I Use a Separate Debit Card for Fun Money and It Works
I was never the kind of person who could keep a spreadsheet budget. I’d track every dollar for a week, then life happened and the spreadsheet died. What actually worked was dumber and simpler: I opened a second checking account just for fun money.
How it works
Each paycheck, a fixed amount goes into the fun account automatically. That’s my guilt-free spending money. Every coffee, takeout order, and impulse buy comes off that card, and when it’s empty, the fun is done for the pay period. The main account only pays bills and savings, so I can’t accidentally spend the rent on a night out.

Why it beats budgeting apps
- No tracking. The card does the accounting for you. You just watch the balance shrink.
- You can’t overspend. A declined card is a hard stop, which no app gives you.
- It removes the guilt. Money in that account is meant to be spent, so you don’t agonize over every little purchase.
Set it up right
- Pick a realistic number. Too low and you’ll cheat by dipping into the main account.
- Automate the transfer to land the day after payday, before you can talk yourself out of it.
- Use a fee-free account, and turn off overdraft so the card declines instead of charging you.
It’s been a year and I haven’t touched my savings for a single impulse buy. That’s the whole point.
📋 Quick Summary: Open a second checking account for fun money, auto-transfer a fixed amount each payday, and spend only from that card. The empty balance is a hard stop.
