The first time I cleaned a ceiling fan, I made a mess so bad I had to clean the whole room twice. I wiped the top of each blade, and every dust clump came loose and drifted down onto the bed, the floor, and my face.

There is a way to clean ceiling fan blades without a single dust bunny hitting anything, and it uses something already in your linen closet.

How the pillowcase trick works

1. Grab an old pillowcase you do not care much about.
2. Slide it over one fan blade so the blade is fully inside.
3. Press the fabric against the top and bottom of the blade.
4. Pull the pillowcase back toward you, wiping as you go.

All the dust ends up inside the pillowcase instead of in the air. When you are done, take the pillowcase outside and shake it out, then toss it in the wash.

Why this beats a damp cloth

A damp cloth works, but it just moves the dust around into wet streaks, and you have to rinse it constantly. The pillowcase captures the dust dry, which is easier and faster, and nothing falls on the floor below.

For really caked-on grime, like a fan over a stove, do a first pass with the pillowcase, then follow up with a damp cloth. The pillowcase gets the loose stuff so the cloth only has to handle the stuck-on layer.

Do not forget the top of the blades

Everyone wipes the visible bottom of the blade, but dust collects on the top where nobody looks. The pillowcase trick cleans both sides at once, which is the whole point.

I do this once a month now. It takes about two minutes, and my room stays dust-free instead of getting a fresh coating every time I clean.
