I have a golden retriever who sheds enough fur every week to build a second dog. Lint rollers are useless — I was going through three of them per couch session, and the sticky sheets fill up after two swipes. There had to be a better way.

There are several. Here is what actually works when your furniture looks like it is growing its own coat.

The rubber glove method

Put on a rubber dishwashing glove — the kind with the textured grip — and dampen it slightly. Run your hand across the fabric in one direction. The fur clumps together and rolls off like magic. The friction and static from the rubber grab every hair, even the short ones embedded in the weave.

I did my entire three-seater couch in under ten minutes. The hair came off in sheets. It was gross and deeply satisfying.

The squeegee trick

A window squeegee works the same way. Spray the fabric lightly with water (a mist, not a soak), then drag the squeegee across. The rubber blade collects fur into neat little lines you can vacuum up. This is especially good for low-pile rugs and car upholstery.

Fabric softener spray for future prevention

Mix one part liquid fabric softener with three parts water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist your furniture and let it dry. The fabric softener reduces static, which means pet hair does not cling as aggressively. It is not a solution — your dog is still shedding — but it buys you an extra day or two between cleanings.

When to just use the vacuum

If your vacuum has a motorized brush attachment (the spinning kind), that is still your best friend for deep cleans. The rubber glove and squeegee are for quick daily maintenance between vacuum sessions.
