The Standing Desk Alternative That Costs Nothing
I spent months researching standing desks. The motorized ones were $500 minimum. The manual crank ones wobbled in every review. I was about to buy a $700 desk when I realized I already owned everything I needed — in my kitchen.
My kitchen counter is the perfect standing height. A sturdy box on my existing desk works too. The point is not the desk — it is the habit of moving.

Where to Stand for Free
Your kitchen counter or island is probably 36 inches high — standard standing desk height. Bring your laptop over and work there for an hour. The change of scenery is a bonus. I do my morning email on the kitchen counter with coffee and it is genuinely pleasant.
An ironing board is height adjustable. Set it up in your office, put a piece of plywood on top for a flat surface, and you have a standing desk. It looks ridiculous. It works perfectly.
A bookshelf at chest height with a shelf cleared off gives you a standing surface. A sturdy cardboard box on your regular desk raises your laptop to eye level for standing work.
The Real Secret
Standing all day is not the goal — not sitting all day is. I alternate: 45 minutes sitting, 15 minutes standing. Set a timer. The transition itself is what helps — it breaks up the static posture that causes back pain.
I also put my printer on the other side of the room so I have to stand up to get printouts. Tiny forced movements throughout the day add up more than one long standing session.
📋 Quick Summary: Your kitchen counter, an ironing board, or a box on your desk works as a standing desk — the habit matters more than the equipment.
