How to Keep Your Christmas Tree Fresh for an Extra Week
The second week is when most Christmas trees start to die. The first week they drink water like crazy and look great. Week two — needles on the floor, branches drooping. The tree stand is probably full but the tree is not drinking.
Here is the thing most people miss: the water is not the problem — the seal is. The trunk reseals itself when it dries out even briefly. Once sealed, no amount of water in the stand helps because the tree cannot absorb it.

The Mid-Season Re-Cut (Yes, It Can Be Done)
This sounds insane with a fully decorated tree. But if your tree stopped drinking: drain the stand completely. Have someone hold the tree steady. Carefully tip it to one side and use a handsaw to shave a thin slice — even a quarter inch — off the bottom of the trunk.
Put it back in a stand with fresh water immediately. The tree will start drinking again within hours. I have done this twice and it added a full week both times.
Yes, it is awkward. Have towels ready for the water that will spill. Turn off nearby lights to be safe. But it works.
Prevention Is Easier
Check the water level every single morning. Set a phone reminder if you have to. The number one reason trees die early is the water dropping below the trunk cut for just a few hours. Once that cut dries out and seals, you are on the path to a needle massacre.
Also, lower the room temperature at night if you can. Trees last longer in cooler rooms. I turn my thermostat down to 62 at night — saves on heating too.
📋 Quick Summary: If your tree stops drinking, do a mid-season re-cut of the trunk — it restarts water absorption and adds a week of freshness.
