Lemon peels. Ice cubes. That is the combo that saved my kitchen from smelling like a swamp. I had tried those disposal cleaning pods from the store — the ones that foam up in colors that do not exist in nature. They worked for maybe a day and cost six dollars.

Then I read that restaurants use ice and citrus to clean their industrial disposals. The same thing works in a home kitchen and costs nothing if you were going to throw those peels away anyway.

The Ice Cube Scrub

Drop a handful of ice cubes into the disposal and run cold water. Turn it on. The ice gets pulverized and the shards scrape the inside of the grinding chamber — the same way a pumice stone scrubs a callus. It knocks off food residue and sludge that builds up over time.

I do this about once a week. You will hear it working — it is loud and crunchy. That is the sound of gunk being dislodged.

Then the Citrus

After the ice, drop in lemon peels, lime peels, or orange peels — whatever citrus you have been cooking with. Run cold water and grind them up. The oils in the peel coat the inside of the disposal and leave a fresh smell that lasts for days.

Do not use whole lemons — just the peels after you have used the fruit for something else. Too much citrus pulp can gum up the blades.

Vinegar for the Deep Clean

Once a month, pour half a cup of white vinegar into the disposal and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then flush with hot water while running the disposal. The vinegar dissolves mineral buildup and kills the bacteria that actually cause the smell — not just masking it like the lemon peels do.

Between the ice scrub for mechanical cleaning, citrus for freshness, and vinegar for bacteria, you basically never need to buy disposal cleaners again.
