I priced out cedar raised beds at a garden center. Four feet by eight feet: $180. For a wooden box. I almost paid it because I assumed lumber was expensive and I did not know how to build anything.

Then I walked past the fence picket aisle at the hardware store. A 6-foot cedar dog-ear fence picket costs about $3. It is the same cedar. It is just thinner—which, for a garden bed holding soil, is completely fine.

The Materials for One 4×4 Bed

• 12 cedar fence pickets (6-foot, dog-ear style—cut off the dog-ear tip)
• 4 cedar 2x2s, cut to 12-inch lengths (corner posts)
• 1-1/4 inch exterior deck screws
• Total cost: roughly $28–32 depending on local lumber prices

Assembly (No Fancy Tools Needed)

1. Cut six pickets in half to get 12 three-foot boards. These are your side and end panels.
2. Screw two pickets horizontally to two 2×2 corner posts to form one side. Repeat for all four sides.
3. Screw the four sides together at the corners through the 2x2s.
4. Line the inside with landscape fabric to keep soil from washing out between picket gaps.
5. Fill with soil and plant.

The whole thing took me about two hours for the first one, forty-five minutes for the second. I built four of them in a weekend. They have survived three growing seasons so far with no rot because cedar is naturally decay-resistant.

What I Would Do Differently

I made the first one 12 inches tall. That is fine for most vegetables but shallow for carrots and potatoes. My second set is 18 inches—I stacked three pickets high instead of two. The taller the bed, the less you have to bend over, and the more root depth your plants get.

Also: line the bottom with cardboard before adding soil. It smothers the grass underneath, breaks down over time, and worms love it. Skip the cardboard and you will be pulling grass out of your garden bed all summer.
