I ignored my bedroom blinds for about eight months. They went from white to a shade I would describe as “disappointed beige.” I kept thinking I would take them down one weekend and soak them in the bathtub. That weekend never came.

Then my sister visited. She walked into the room, looked at the blinds, looked at me, and said, “You know you can clean those in ten minutes without taking them down, right?”

I did not know. But now I do, and I have not soaked blinds in a bathtub since.

The sock method (yes, really)

Grab an old tube sock — the kind that goes halfway up your calf. Mix equal parts warm water and white vinegar in a bowl. Put the sock on your hand like a puppet, dip it in the mixture, wring it out so it is damp not dripping, and run it along each slat.

Your hand fits perfectly between standard blind slats. The sock fabric grabs dust on top and bottom at the same time. Flip the sock inside out when one side gets dirty and keep going.

For the truly dusty (like mine were)

If your blinds have accumulated the kind of dust that clumps together into tiny felt sheets — I have been there — do a dry pass first. Use a microfiber cloth or a Swiffer duster to knock off the loose stuff. Then follow with the damp sock. Damp dusting over thick dry dust just makes mud.

I learned this the hard way and spent an extra five minutes wiping brown streaks off white blinds. Do not be like me.

The tool hack for multiple sets of blinds

If you have blinds on every window in the house, the sock method gets tedious. Grab a pair of kitchen tongs, wrap each side in a microfiber cloth, secure with rubber bands, and clamp a slat between them. Run the tongs across the slat and both sides get cleaned in one pass.

This tong trick cut my whole-house blind cleaning from forty minutes to about fifteen. My sister thought I was a genius for about two seconds before I admitted I saw it on the internet.

The vertical blind problem

If you have vertical blinds — the kind on sliding doors — the tong trick does not work as well. For those, close the blinds so they overlap, spray a microfiber cloth with your vinegar solution, and wipe from top to bottom in long strokes. Work panel by panel. It takes a little longer but still beats taking them down.
