The Best Budget Blender That Pulverizes Ice Without Sounding Like a Jet Engine

My first blender was a $25 Oster from Walmart. It could not crush an ice cube. It would just spin the top layer and leave everything underneath untouched. Smoothies had whole frozen strawberries in them. I would chew my drinks. The motor smelled like burning plastic every time I used it and eventually it did burn out — literally smoked on my counter making a protein shake.

You do not need a $500 Vitamix to crush ice. You need about $65 and the right model.

Ninja Professional Plus (BN701, ~$70)

This is the blender that made me stop wishing I could afford a Vitamix. 1400 watts of power with stacked blade assembly — three sets of blades at different heights instead of one blade at the bottom. That is the key difference. A single bottom blade creates a vortex that spins everything around. Stacked blades pulverize from multiple levels simultaneously.

Ice crushing: turns a full pitcher of ice cubes into snow in about 30 seconds. Frozen fruit: smooth, no chunks. The 72-ounce pitcher is enormous — you can blend a week’s worth of smoothies at once and freeze them in mason jars.

Noise: it is loud. All high-powered blenders are loud. But it is a lower-pitched roar than a Vitamix — more tolerable. The base has suction cups that grip the counter so it does not walk across your kitchen while running.

Downsides: The pitcher and lid are not dishwasher safe — hand wash only. The blade assembly is fixed in the pitcher so cleaning under the blades requires reaching your hand in and being careful.

Oster Pro 1200 (~$65)

Oster’s redemption arc. 1200 watts with a glass jar — heavier than plastic but does not scratch or absorb odors. The blade direction reverses automatically during blending to pull ingredients down from the top.

Ice crushing is good but not Ninja level. It makes crushed ice, not snow. Smooth enough for smoothies but you might find a small frozen berry chunk at the bottom. The glass jar is a plus if you blend hot soups.

Which One to Buy

Get the Ninja Professional Plus if ice crushing is the priority. The stacked blades genuinely make a difference. Get the Oster Pro 1200 if you prefer a glass jar and blend hot soups. Both are under $75 and both will outlast a $25 blender by years.

📋 Quick Summary: Ninja Professional Plus ($70) — best ice crushing with stacked blades, 1400 watts. Oster Pro 1200 ($65) — glass jar, auto-reverse blade. Skip the $25 blenders.
