The first hole I ever drilled in drywall exploded. Not a clean round hole — a jagged star-shaped crater with paper peeling away from the edges. The picture I hung covered it. Mostly. But every time I looked at that wall I knew what was hiding behind the frame: my shame.

The fix is so simple it made me angry when I learned it. Put a piece of masking tape over the spot before you drill. That is it. The tape holds the paper face of the drywall in place while the drill bit cuts through. No tear-out, no crater, clean hole every time.

Why Drywall Tears

Drywall is gypsum plaster sandwiched between two layers of paper. The paper gives drywall its surface strength. When a drill bit pushes through, it catches the paper and tears it — like poking a hole in a piece of paper with a blunt pencil. The tape reinforces the paper so the bit cuts through cleanly instead of ripping.

The Full Method

1. Mark your spot with a pencil.
2. Stick a piece of painter’s tape or masking tape over the mark — about two inches square.
3. Re-mark on top of the tape if you cannot see the pencil mark through it.
4. Start drilling slowly. Do not go full speed from the start. Let the bit establish a clean entry before speeding up.
5. Stop when you feel the bit punch through. Do not keep drilling — you might hit a pipe or wire behind the wall.
6. Peel the tape off. Clean hole underneath.

This trick also works for drilling into tile — the tape prevents the drill bit from skating across the slick surface before it bites. Much easier than trying to hold the bit in place by hand.

Bonus: Catch the Dust

While you are at it, tape a small envelope or Post-it note just below the hole you are drilling, folded open like a tiny shelf. It catches most of the drywall dust that would otherwise end up on your floor or baseboard. Or hold a vacuum hose nozzle just below the drill with your other hand. Drywall dust gets everywhere — this keeps it contained.
