How to Tell If an Avocado Is Ripe Without Squeezing It
I watched a guy in the produce section methodically squeeze about twenty avocados last week. By the time he found one he liked, every other avocado in the pile had his thumbprint in it. Those avocados were going to bruise and brown and someone else was going to pay for his indecision.

You do not need to squeeze. There are better ways.
The Stem Test
This is the one that changed how I buy avocados. Look at the little nub of stem at the top. Flick it off with your thumb. What you see underneath tells you everything:
- Bright green — perfect. The avocado is ripe and ready to eat today or tomorrow.
- Brown — overripe. The inside will have brown spots or stringy texture.
- Hard to remove / yellow-green underneath — not ready yet. Give it a few days.
I used to come home with avocados that looked perfect outside and were gray and stringy inside. The stem test has cut my avocado failure rate to near zero.
Color Matters
This only works for Hass avocados — the most common kind in US stores. A Hass turns from bright green to dark purplish-black as it ripens. If it is still bright green it is days away. If it is deep brown-black it is ready.
Other varieties like Fuerte or Bacon stay green even when ripe, so color is not reliable. For those, use the stem test or the next method.
The Palm Test
If you must squeeze — and honestly you probably do not need to — use your palm, not your fingertips. Cradle the avocado in your whole hand and apply gentle pressure with the base of your palm. A ripe avocado yields slightly, like pressing the flesh between your thumb and forefinger. Fingertips concentrate force on one spot and create bruises.
Speed Ripening
Bought avocados that are not ready? Put them in a paper bag with a banana or an apple. The ethylene gas from the other fruit speeds ripening dramatically — sometimes overnight. I keep a paper bag in my pantry just for this. It turns four-day avocados into one-day avocados.
Whatever you do, do not put unripe avocados in the fridge. The cold stops the ripening process and they will stay rock-hard forever.
📋 Quick Summary: Flick off the stem nub — green underneath means ripe, brown means overripe. If you must squeeze, use your palm not your fingertips. Speed ripening by placing in a paper bag with a banana.
