Rental leases have a way of forbidding the one thing you actually need to do. Mine said “no nails in walls.” Every wall was plaster—no drywall anchors, no Command strips that actually held anything heavier than a postcard.

I hung a sixteen-by-twenty framed print using hot glue. It stayed up for two years. When I moved out, I peeled it off in ten seconds and the landlord kept my entire deposit.

Why Hot Glue Works

Hot glue bonds to painted surfaces with surprising strength—enough to hold frames up to about five pounds. But the bond is mechanical, not chemical. It grips the texture of the paint. When you need it off, heat from a hair dryer softens the glue and it releases cleanly without pulling paint.

This only works on smooth painted walls. Textured walls, wallpaper, or bare drywall will not release cleanly. Test in an inconspicuous spot first—behind a door, inside a closet.

How to Do It

Apply hot glue directly to the frame, not the wall. Run a thick bead along the top edge of the back of the frame, about a quarter-inch in from the edge. Do not skimp—you want a continuous bead, not dots.

Press the frame firmly against the wall and hold it in place for sixty seconds. Use a level while you hold it. Once the glue sets, it is not moving.

Let it cure for an hour before you walk away and trust it. Hot glue sets in seconds but reaches full strength after it has completely cooled. An hour is safe.

How to Remove It

Warm the frame edge with a hair dryer on high heat for about thirty seconds. Move the dryer along the top edge. The glue will soften. Slide a piece of dental floss behind the frame and work it down with a sawing motion through the softened glue. The frame releases cleanly.

Any glue residue left on the wall will peel off when warm—just reheat with the hair dryer and roll it off with your finger. If any paint comes with it, that spot was already failing. In my experience across four apartments, the paint stayed pristine.

Weight Limits

This is not for heavy mirrors or canvas wraps with thick wood frames. Keep it under five pounds. Light wood frames, small canvases, unframed prints on foam board—those are ideal. If you are unsure, hang the frame somewhere you can keep an eye on it for the first day. If it holds overnight, it will hold indefinitely.
