How to Cut Your Subscriptions Without Feeling Deprived
I did a subscription audit last January and found out I was paying for seven streaming services. Seven. I could name four of them. The other three I had signed up for to watch one specific show and forgotten to cancel. One of them I had been paying for for fourteen months without using it once. That was a hundred and forty dollars I will never get back.
I cut my monthly subscription spending by more than half without feeling like I lost anything. Here is how.

Do the audit
Open your bank app or credit card statement and search for the word “subscription” or “recurring.” Write down every one you find. Include the annual ones that only show up once a year — divide those by 12 to get the monthly equivalent. You will probably find at least one subscription you forgot about. Most people find two or three.
My audit uncovered: Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime, and something called “BritBox” that I genuinely do not remember signing up for. BritBox alone was eight dollars a month for fourteen months.
Rotate, do not stack
You do not need all the streaming services at once. Subscribe to one, watch everything you want, cancel, move to the next one. Most services let you cancel anytime and your access continues until the end of the billing period. There is no penalty for canceling and resubscribing — your watch history and preferences are saved. I now keep one or two services active at a time instead of seven, and I save about fifty dollars a month.
The 48-hour rule
When you want to subscribe to something new — a streaming service, an app, a monthly box — wait 48 hours before entering your payment info. Most impulse subscriptions feel urgent in the moment and completely forgettable two days later. The ones you still want after 48 hours are the ones you will actually use. This rule alone has saved me from at least five subscriptions I would have signed up for and abandoned.
I now spend about thirty dollars a month on subscriptions instead of eighty. I watch the same amount of TV. BritBox is a distant memory.
📋 Quick Summary: Audit your bank statement for all recurring charges, rotate streaming services one at a time instead of stacking, and enforce a 48-hour waiting period before any new subscription.
