My shower had turned into a sad drizzle. Half the nozzles were completely blocked. The other half sprayed water at weird angles — one stream hit the opposite wall, another shot straight into my ear. I stood there for a week, annoyed every morning, convinced I needed to buy a new shower head.

I did not need a new shower head. I needed vinegar and a plastic bag. That is literally it.

The Plastic Bag Method That Works Overnight

Fill a sturdy plastic bag — a Ziploc works best — with white vinegar. Not apple cider vinegar. Not cleaning vinegar. Plain white distilled vinegar. Add enough to fully submerge the face of the shower head. If your shower head is on a hose, detach it and soak it in a bowl. If it is fixed to the wall, the bag method is your only option.

Wrap the bag around the shower head so the nozzles are completely submerged. Use a rubber band or a hair tie to secure the bag around the pipe. If the bag keeps slipping, wrap another rubber band higher up or use two bags nested together for more structure. Leave it overnight — at least 8 hours.

In the morning, remove the bag and run the shower on hot for a minute. You will see white mineral chunks shooting out of the nozzles. That is all the calcium and lime buildup that vinegar dissolved. The spray pattern will be dramatically better. For really stubborn clogs, you might need a second overnight soak.

Why Vinegar Works

The white crusty stuff clogging your shower head is mostly calcium carbonate — the same stuff that builds up in kettles and coffee makers. Vinegar is acetic acid, which dissolves calcium carbonate on contact. It is the same chemistry as commercial descalers, minus the harsh fumes and the twelve-dollar price tag.

Quick Maintenance So It Never Gets Bad Again

After the deep clean, wipe the shower head face with a dry cloth after every shower. It takes five seconds. This prevents water droplets from drying on the nozzles and leaving mineral deposits behind. Once a month, do a quick one-hour vinegar soak. It keeps things flowing and you will never have to deal with the overnight emergency fix again.
