I ruined a brand new shirt with bacon grease three hours after taking the tags off. Three hours. I tried dabbing it with water — which makes oil stains worse, do not do that — and then I tried rubbing alcohol which faded the fabric. The shirt went into the “paint clothes” pile. Then my mom visited.

She pulled out dish soap. Just regular blue Dawn. Rubbed it into the dried, week-old grease stain. Let it sit for ten minutes. Washed it. Gone. I was annoyed at how easy it was.

Why Dish Soap Works on Grease

Dish soap is designed to break down cooking oils at a molecular level. Laundry detergent is not. Laundry detergent targets body oils and dirt, which are chemically different from the triglycerides in cooking oil. Dish soap has surfactants that specifically grab onto grease and pull it out of fabric fibers.

You can use this on cotton, polyester, blends, even delicates — just test a hidden spot first if you are worried about colorfastness.

The Method

1. Do not wet the stain with water first. Water creates a barrier that prevents soap from penetrating the oil.
2. Squirt a drop of liquid dish soap directly onto the stain.
3. Rub it in with your finger or a soft toothbrush for 30 seconds. You will see the soap start to emulsify the grease.
4. Let it sit 10-15 minutes. Longer for old stains.
5. Wash on warm — not cold. Warm water helps the soap finish the job.
6. Check the stain before drying. Heat sets oil stains permanently. If it is still there, repeat.

For Really Stubborn Grease

Mix dish soap with a pinch of baking soda to make a paste. The baking soda adds gentle abrasion without damaging fabric. Scrub, wait 30 minutes, then wash. This has saved two more shirts and one pair of jeans.

Cornstarch works too for fresh stains — pour it on, let it absorb for 20 minutes, brush off, then dish soap. The cornstarch pulls out the oil before it sets.
