Reduce Eye Strain When Working on Screens All Day

By 3 PM every workday, my eyes felt like someone had rubbed sand in them. Dry, gritty, and tired. I would rub them, which made it worse, then squint at my screen for another three hours until my head started throbbing. I thought this was just the cost of having a desk job. It is not.

The 20-20-20 rule actually works. Every twenty minutes, look at something twenty feet away for twenty seconds. The science is straightforward: your eye muscles are relaxed when focused at a distance and tensed when focused up close. Staring at a screen eighteen inches from your face keeps them in a constant state of contraction. The twenty-second break lets them reset.

Screen Brightness and Position Matter

Your screen should be slightly dimmer than the ambient light in the room. If your monitor is the brightest thing in your field of view, your pupils are constantly adjusting — open wide for the room, narrow for the screen, back and forth all day. Also, the top of your screen should be at or slightly below eye level. Looking up at a screen exposes more of your eye surface to the air, accelerating evaporation. Looking slightly down does the opposite.
